The Indian actress and classical dancer Madhyama Segal has attracted interest for her portrayal in Netflix’s Class (2023), the Indian adaptation of the Spanish series Elite. She was born in Delhi in 1994 into a distinguished family steeped in Indian art and culture. Renowned in Indian cinema and theatre, her great-grandmother is the legendary Zohra Segal, who most famously starred in films such Veer-Zaara and The Mistress of Spices. Renowned Odissi dancer Madhyama’s grandma Kiran Segal is from India; her mother Sujata Segal is a TV actress from there. Madhyama’s path in the performing arts has been very much shaped by this legacy.
Early on, especially in Odissi, Madhyama Segal had classical Indian dance instruction under the direction of her grandmother. She has been to esteemed cultural events such as the Konark Dance Festival and the Khajuraho Dance Festival over years. These celebrations provide important venues for presenting traditional Indian dance styles, and Madhyama’s performances have been much hailed for their grace and accuracy. Her dance career has also brought her to foreign locations where she performed Indian classical dance in China, Singapore, and portions of Africa.
Apart from her classical dancing profession, Madhyama Segal has also ventured into acting. Her major break came with the 2023 premiere of Class, a crime-thriller series examining class and caste divisions in a top Delhi institution. Three working-class students—including Madhyama’s Saba, who negotiates the biases and difficulties of learning among Delhi’s affluent elite—are central in the program. As Saba negotiates her Muslim upbringing in a hostile, wealthy setting, her narrative explores problems of classism, cultural identity, and religious persecution.
Madhyama made her acting debut in class, and her Saba performance has been much praised. Her promise as an actress is shown by her capacity to give the character—who encounters discrimination and inner conflict—depth. Though mostly a thriller, the show also offers viewers relevance and interest since it is a social commentary on the injustices ingrained in Indian society. The way the show handles teenage topics including drugs, sexuality, and social tensions has been likened to other young dramas including Euphoria.
Apart from her career success, Madhyama’s personal life has drawn interest as well. She is in a relationship with musician Josh Fernandez, a member of The F16s, and the pair are candid on social media about their union. Though Madhyama is still fresh to the acting field, she has already found a niche for herself by combining her acting ability with her classical dance background.
Madhyama’s career shows her special ability to balance current entertainment with the fields of classical Indian dance. Her performance in Class has established her as a bright talent to watch; given her background and abilities, she is probably going to keep having a major influence in both spheres.
